Who is Breakthrough?

One of the first things people ask about us is who is a part of our company and what we do. We got our start in the theater business. We consider ourselves theater people and believe in impactful experiences, which we first learned from the theater world. Nothing is more powerful than the combination of our experience and beginnings. Experiential marketing made us realize that we can do theater for corporations.

We can do pop-up stores that are fully immersive, we can produce a trade show booth that truly represents a brand, and every single one of those items, whether it’s a mobile marketing tour, a trade show, a pop-up store, or just a general product launch, it all goes back to what is the brand’s story you’re trying to tell. It goes back to theater and storytelling. What are the scenery and settings we need to tell this story?

We are theater people. We are producers, carpenters, artists, painters, and project managers dedicated to building something extraordinary daily. That’s our background, and that’s what we’re looking to do.

We don’t want to do the bland, normal, boring, “Hey, here’s a trailer with some vinyl graphics on it.” We don’t want to do the bland, normal, boring, “Hey, here’s a trade show pop-up with some graphics printed on it.”

There’s a time and place for that. We can help you get those items, but what really gets our juices flowing and gets us excited about coming to work every day is the ability to build something extraordinary with that next level of detail that brings a consumer into that brand space. They walk out knowing this is who you are. This is this brand’s vocation. It’s the Disneyland or Disney World experience, regardless of the footprint size. We want it to be awesome, engaging, and represent the brand’s story.

Can You Build This?

People always want to know, “Can you build this?” “How much time do you need?” While those are generic questions, that’s exactly what our project managers and the team can help you figure out. All we need to get started is a Google swipe file to a full-blown rendering, a set of blueprints, to a hand-drawn napkin sketch. We’ve received it all and been able to create great projects based on each of those.

How long something takes depends on what you’re looking to accomplish, and the material availability, and our project team will come back to you with a realistic timeline. We give you as much information as possible so you can relay that to the brand or your client to determine if they can hit their deadlines. If something they really want, like a finish, a color, or a material is not available, our team can find similar materials or create something to match precisely what they’re looking for. We can often do that under budget instead of buying something already in the marketplace.  That shows our dedication as a team–we will help figure out how to build something that you bring to us, and if we can’t build it, our commitment to you is to help you figure out who a better vendor or supplier is. We believe that no one company can do everything from a fabrication standpoint. Our specialty lies in woodworking, and we are ramping up our metal and fabrication teams and all the mobile marketing tours we’ve been able to help produce.

There are so many other items, like specific acrylic pieces, that we may not be able to create, and we will let you know that upfront. We can also help source those items if they’re a more minor project component and eliminate your having to manage multiple vendors. You can just discuss with us what you want to accomplish, and we will streamline that process. We look at what you must build and inform you of a realistic timeline and budget. We work to prevent change orders so you can tell your client confidently how much a build will cost and how long it will take, and it will be delivered on time.

Do You Do Everything In-House?

The simple answer is no. There’s a famous saying, “A jack of all trades is a master of none,” and I genuinely believe that. We can’t honestly say that we are experts at fabricating every single component that goes into a project. We have multiple trusted vendors in our network who have proven they can work within budget and on deadline. We also can leverage that network to find out if our vendors have a connection for a specialized item.

You can go through us solely if you choose, but we will let you know if it’s not something in our wheelhouse. We’ve probably turned down more projects than we’ve taken on because it’s something that’s not in my wheelhouse. If we can’t do something in-house, we will let you know exactly who our vendor is that’s working on it. We will find someone who can meet your budget and time deadline to ensure you get a really kickass project.

What is Your Process?

We love answering this question! We love to explain how what Breakthrough does will fit your client’s needs. We follow the Breakthrough Events System methodology, a unique process we’ve refined over the last 16 years and more than 416 projects. Those projects have garnered over 8 million lasting and impactful impressions from an event we’ve produced.

Step 1: The Possibility

What does the client want? How do we get there? We discover this through budgeting and proposals, among other things. If there are any variables, we will let you know upfront. We’ll never come back to you with unexpected expenses. After we issue an event, we’re not going to come and give you hidden costs.

In the Possibility stage, our team is doing their due diligence on the front side to look at finalizing the budget, getting you numbers, and letting you know how long that will take. We produce a detailed production schedule, which will then lay out all of the other components.

Step 2: The Path

This is when we’ve gotten signoffs and deposits in place from a fabrication standpoint. We start narrowing in on the specific details. We’ll produce specific shop drawings and material samples, make sure colors match, and ensure everything is in line with what the brand is looking to create. This process can last one day to three weeks, depending on the breadth of the project.

Step 3: The Production

This is where we start swinging hammers, cutting wood and getting everything sent out to the CNC machine because, in the Path process, we’re designing everything in 3D. In software, we can click a few buttons, and all parts and pieces get cut by our CNC machine. All our drawings are then fabricated. We will produce exactly what you see in our 3D renderings, submittal, and shop drawings from the Path phase. Depending on the scope of your project, this can take a few days to a few months.

Step 4: The Prize

In the end, you get the prize. The prize is when your event goes live with the fabricated pieces done, and we finalize things like crating, logistics, and event staff. Your prize is an outstanding event with breathtaking production value.

Where are you located? Where can you help us?

We have locations in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Long Island, New York. We got our start in 2007, building sets for theater productions. We expanded to experiential marketing with projects for the New York Yankees, Oprah, and the Yahoo Fan Experience in Vancouver at the Winter Olympics in 2010. Though we’re based on the East Coast, we can and have built and deployed experiences anywhere in the United States. Our onsite production leads can travel anywhere in the US to lead local crews to assemble and strike. We have relationships with trusted and skilled hands all over the country. We hope this information has answered your questions, but if you have more, we encourage you to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!
